What is it with Dems and sex?
The latest is our dear mayor here in San Francisco, who had an affair with his campaign manager's wife. I think it's high-larious, but I tell you, political professionals may think twice before going on Gavin's payroll in the future.
I don't think these personal matters matter much. But it does point out an important difference between the parties.
When Mark Foley sent lewd messages, the Republicans kicked him out. Keep in mind that he never touched anyone, and that no one was underage. He was creepy, and that was enough. It was the right thing to do.
Meanwhile, if you're a senator of Massachusetts and actually kill your mistress, apparently you can depend on the support of Dems to re-elect you for 30 years. And if you're a married sitting president, and get your Little Rocks off with a subordinate, 20+ years your junior, well, Dems will fawn.
I don't think that either party has a lock on morality. It just seems to me that the Republicans' immune response is just a bit better.
Let's see how this affects Gavin's future in politics. It's clear how little respect the mayor has for the people around him. A Republican wouldn't survive this. Let's see if his party responds appropriately.

Oh please. Yes, the Mark Foley thing was overy-hyped, but the only reason the Republicans kicked him out was when the public found out about him! Don't you even realize that's why people were disgusted with them, because the house leadership knew about it, but did absolutely nothing about it until they had to!
Newt Gingrich, the big GOP leader who was responsible for Republican success in the '90s, had an affair with an aide and divorced his wife while she was in the hospital with cancer. There's plenty of sexual immorality in the Republican party (not to even mention corruption), although the media doesn't cover it nearly as much as in the Democratic party.

Men messing with 16 year old boys is a different kind of creepy than messing with an adult woman. Democrat politicians tend to restrict themselves to dalliances that, though illicit, could be considered red-blooded.

Newsome's most recent ex is too young to buy liquor, and that's a little bit creepy. But following in the heels of Willie Brown, Newsome's a bit of a prude by SF politico standards, and the affair with his campaign manager's wife is notable for its stupidity more than for its immorality.
Don't forget that Gingrich had to step down as speaker for yet another dalliance with and aide, and he was followed in short order by another dude, Livingston, who also had to step down for screwing the help.
Politicians are a horny lot, whatever the party affiliation; it's one of the perks of power that they're able to act out their lust.
