Perhaps you've read my earlier posts on why the idea of "net neutrality" is so lame, in my opinion. My position is that premium services, be it network bandwidth or any other good or service, are part of a healthy, forward-looking market.
Net neutrality advocates are arguing the opposite, that "fairness" must come first, and progress second. It's an old socialist saw that's been disproved in pretty much every industry that offers tiers of quality — the PC market, food, automobiles — all of which are improving apace. Many consumers will fight heartily for their Macs, Whole Foods and Passats, all of which are premium products near the upper tier of their markets.
Well, here are two new challenges for the neutrality community to contend with: "certified" email and Skype's deal with Intel.
Will they succeed? Who knows. But they must be allowed to try...otherwise, we remain stuck in neutral.
